ABOUT GRACE

I am a senior at Savannah College of Art and Design majoring in Fibers with a specialization in weaving (floor, dobby, and jacquard), hand and machine knitting, and natural dye. My love for all things fibers began with a casual knitting lesson from my brother in 2016. While he abandoned the hobby shortly thereafter, I developed a deep love for the possibilities of this art form. Through the manipulation of materials like wire, stainless steel, elastic yarn, and silk-wrapped paper yarn, I create fine art textiles that explore the understanding of what a fabric is and how it can be used. Material development is a central process in all of my work, and I consider how innovative material combinations interact with each other and with different structural techniques in knits and wovens. My works take inspiration from color and material characteristics as metaphors for familial relations as seen in the finished work Twin Souls and the digital pattern collections Landscape Library and Grandma’s Flower Field. I enjoy the pursuit of textiles both as art for interior spaces and as pieces that people can enjoy in their day to day lives or within their families.
